Essential Question: Why are books banned or censored?

I believed that books are banned or censored because many people feel that it is inappropriate or may misguide audiences towards wrongdoings. For example, Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain has a word that is very inappropriate for young children to learn and very harsh for the African Americans to hear them. Thus, the book had to be banned in the States. These banned books were prohibited due to other various reasons such as a negative influence on the readers. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury was banned because it encouraged people to burn books. In addition, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger portrayed negative influence of teenagers during the early 1900s. Salinger used Holden, the main character, to show the readers a typical American teenager during the Cold War: drinking, smoking, and roaming around the city for a week. Overall, in my opinion, every people have different perspective or feelings towards books and it is our own personal decision to determine whether the book should be banned or not.

Reflection: Gender and Equality

1. Which book did you find the most valuable and why?
I found Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger the most valuable because it showed how typical teenagers were like in the 1900s. Through Holden, we can infer that the teenagers are becoming rebellious and wanting to do whatever they wanted to do.

2. Which task/project did you find the most challenging and why?
I found my perspective writing the most challenging especially the opposition side. It was very difficult to write in an opposite side of practice of sati. Because I favor the proposition, I had to do a lot of research on people who thought the opposite way. For my writing, I choose Ibn Battuata as my main character who witnessed the practice of sati. Through research, I found out that some of the people actually portrayed practice of sati as a devotion to their husbands.

3. Which task/project seemed the most valuable?
I believed that the perspective writing seemed the most valuable assignment because it gave me a new perspective of the religion practice. I began to view the sati toward the positive side. As I finished writing my essay, I never knew native people would feel certain ways that were completely different from me. The most shocking news was that the natives saw sati as a devotion and moral practice for widows.

4. What changes would you recommend to the unit in order to enhance learning and opportunities to think more deeply (do not consider grades when you answer this)?
I would do more in-depth research on the topics and portray how it influence me. In addition, compare the tradition of other cultures with people’s own culture and see if they have similar relationships. It would be very beneficial to see the similarities or difference within different cultures and how people see those cultures. I would also focus on “why,” for example, why is other countries’ culture different from ours and what makes us different or unique than other cultures?

Connection with English Literature

In Dracula by Bram Stoker, I have read that scientific technologies were worth nothing because it could not cure Lucy’s wounds from turning into vampires. However in today’s society, technologies mostly benefit people such as medical care. These technologies prevents many people from death unlike Lucy. Also in Dracula, only through superstition they were able to solve Dracula’s weakness. However in the real world, superstition will never you achieve anything. Not only Dracula shows lack of ignorance in technology, but also in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

2010 World Cup

In 11 days, 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa will start and the tensions of the people are rising. In Group B, Korea will face the Argentina, world’s 7th place in FIFA World Cup and champion in 1986. Argentina has all time best player named Lionel Messi. In Argentina, he is considered the best and invincible. The speed of Messi is no match for any other soccer players. His fast agility and efficient ball dribbling causes other players to tremble. In Barcelona, England Premier League, Messi scored 47 goals total. Since he is 22 years old, it would be his first time playing on FIFA World Cup. Many other countries feel threaten by Argentina’s best player. However, on the other hand, South Korea also has hidden card on their sleeves. Park Ji Sung considers one of the top 10 best players in Korea. Even though Park Ji Sung’s skills can not be matched with Messi, there is slightly some chance that Korea will go to the finals just like in 2002 World Cup in Korea. Everyone in Korea is hoping for the miracle in 2002 again. In addition, the Red Devils, Korean cheering group who wears red shirts to represent Korea, will be cheering in front of the City Hall. The streets will be covered in red and everyone become in one to support Korean soccer players.

History of Technology

When we first think of the word “technology”, we always mention about computers, cars, televisions, ipods, and dish washers. But after a while, we wonder “where did they come from? and how old is technology?” The answer to those questions are that technologies were first developed when people began to realize the use of sticks from the early days. From the early Stone Age to current day, technologies has been the most efficient and easier for humans. Therefore, we can say that technologies are like humans’ best friends. We, humans, depend on technologies and technologies depend on us. As human gradually began to gain interests on technological devices, technologies began to develop and new kinds of products, such as the computer, televisions, and telephones, were being introduced throughout the world.
